The bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry is one of the four key industries to rejuvenate the modern manufacturing in Beijing

l The rapid increasing of Beijing's bioengineering & pharmaceutical industry has been developing at the speed over 15% successively for many years; the biopharmaceutical industry and the medical apparatus industry have ranked the top position in China.

l In 2003, the industry production value was 14.31 billion Yuan, 15.2% higher than that of the previous year; the added value of industry was 7.19 billion Yuan, 21.4% higher than that of the previous year; the profit was 2.08 billion Yuan, 10.0% higher than that of the previous year; and the contribution rate added to the whole city's industry was 6.6%.

l The distinct advantage in high-end industry, the average profit rate of the industry is higher than that of the same industry in other districts in China.

Beijing Bioengineering and Pharmaceutical Industry overcast the whole industrial chain of medicinal products from development to manufacture, sale, wholesale (distribution) and retail, establishing the industrial structure of comprehensive development including chemical pharmacy, Chinese traditional medicine, medical appliance and bio-pharmacy.

The chemical pharmaceutical industry takes the important role in China. In 2003, Beijing chemical pharmaceutical industry realized the sales income of 4.57 billion Yuan, which ranked the 13 th in China; and the total profit was 0.61 billion Yuan, which ranked the 9 th in China.

The medical apparatus industry is developing flourishingly

Medical apparatus industry is the new increasing point in Beijing's bioengineering and pharmaceutical industry, of which the sale and profit occupy the top position in domestic market. Many products have pretty strong competitive capability in China. In 2003, Beijing's medical apparatus industry achieved the sales income of 3.06 billion Yuan, which ranked the second in China; and the total profit was 560 million Yuan, which ranked the first in China.

The pharmaceutical distribution industry in Beijing occupies the leading position in China.

The distribution industry is showing its increasing importance in the development of biopharmaceutical industry. There have been already two large-scale pharmaceutical distribution enterprises with the annual sale of over two billion Yuan; and obtaining over 1000 chain drugstores scattering in Beijing area; the sale scale of these enterprises have covered nearly one thousand hospitals or medical institutions in Beijing while irradiating to the surrounding provinces.

Traditional Chinese medicine is the unique medical industry with the long history in China while containing the profound culture deposits and science connotation. In 2003, traditional Chinese medicine industry in Beijing achieved the sales income of 3.44 billion Yuan, ranking the 10 th in china; and the total profit was 580 million Yuan, ranking the 5 th in China.

In 2003, Beijing's biopharmaceutical industry achieved the sales income of 1.62 billion Yuan, ranking the 5 th in China; the gross profit was 150 million Yuan, and ranking the 6 th in China.
