Beijing has a developed urban traffic system

It has preliminarily formed a system with the public traffic network being the primary body, the fast traffic being the hard core, and with considerable capacity and response ability. Such a system is being rapidly developed into a modern, three-dimensional comprehensive urban traffic system with complete functions and advanced management by means of reconstruction and extension.

Urban Road traffic: Beijing has constructed a road network with reasonable structure and clear arrangement consisting of throughways, trunk roads, secondary roads and branch roads. The planned throughway network has a length of 280km. presently an urban throughway system consisting of 4 ring roads and 8 major radiation trunk roads with a total length of 215km has been completed. Seven of the major radiation trunk roads belong to urban throughways within the Fifth Ring Road and to expressways outside the Fifth Ring Road. Two more major radiation trunk roads are planned for completion in 2004, adding to a total of 10 major radiation trunk roads after their completion. The width of main trunk roads is 60-80m, that of secondary trunk roads is 40-50m, branch roads about 30m, throughways not less than 80m, and special trunk roads 120m, thus meeting the requirement of integrated connection to support the ?°multi-centers?± pattern of the city.

Urban Track Way Traffic: The track way traffic network is planned to consist of 13 lines and 3 branches. What are already constructed and put in operation are Line #1, Line #2, Line #13 and Line #8, with a total length of 114km. Line #5 under construction will be completed and put in operation within this year. Subway Line #4, Line #10 (including Olympics Branch), Yizhuang Line and 3 Beijing-Suburb railway line will be completed in 2008 before the Olympic Games. At that time the total length of Beijing??s track way traffic will reach 300km.
